| La Dordogne Department in Aquitaine. Area : 9060 km² Population : 388 334 hab. Main administrative centres : Périgueux Other administrative centres : Bergerac, Nontron, Sarlat-la-Canéda . The huges valleys of the rivers Dordogne, Vézère, Auvézère and Isle, cut through the calcerous plateau of the Green Périgord in the north, there is the white, in the south is the Black, which spread out on the main part of the departement. Farming is composed of cropping, fruit trees (walnut trees), vegetables, tobacco, wine (Bergerac and Monbazillac) and cattle breeding in the north. Big Industries are in Périgueux, Bergerac, Terrasson and related to : food, mechanical engineering, aeronautics, materials and paper. aera of gastronomy (truffes, foie gras) wealthy of Prehistorical Sites, the most beautiful in Europe (Lascaux, Les Eyzies). Dordogne attracts many tourists. Situated on the right shore of the river Isle, Périgueux, administrative centre of the departement, is a commercial and industrial centre : railway materials, stamp firm, leather, tobacco, chemistry. The city owns roman remains (amphitheatre, vesone tower), a byzantin building dating back the XIth century, Saint Front cathedral and St Etienne Cathedral, showing a romanesque style of Périgord from the XIIth century. Founded by the Gallies, the city's name comes from
the Petrocorii's tribe, that is to say the tribe of the four (petro)
